"The Quality of Life," a drama about contrasting lifestyles, begins previews Oct. 24 and opens Oct. 29 at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.

Written and directed by Jane Anderson, this production features three members of the original award-winning Off-Broadway cast -- Dennis Bourtsikaris, Laurie Metcalf and JoBeth Williams. Steven Culp and Caroline Lagerfelt also will appear in the show.

The ensemble has extensive television and film credits. Anderson wrote and directed a series of critically acclaimed TV movies. She won an Emmy Award for writing "The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom" in 1993. She also received Emmy nominations for three later efforts.

Metcalf and Culp both appeared on "Desperate Housewives." Williams co-starred in the movies "Poltergeist" and "The Big Chill."

"The Quality of Life" is set in the Oakland hills shortly after the Mount Vision fire of 1995. In the play, a religious Midwestern couple visit a California cousin and her husband, as both couples deal with personal tragedy.

The production will continue through Nov. 23 at ACT, 415 Geary St. $14-$82; act-sf.org.
