The world watches as a large meteor shower streaks across the skies. Hidden in the meteor field is a brown dwarf, a dead star. It smashes into the moon in a tremendous explosion of rock and debris. Fragments of the moon itself penetrate Earth's atmosphere and make impact. Even though initial damage is minimal, nerves are frayed throughout the planet.

IMPACT, THE EVENT MINISERIES STARRING DAVID JAMES ELLIOTT, NATASHA HENSTRIDGE, STEVEN CULP AND JAMES CROMWELL PICKED UP BY ABC NETWORK

Miniseries also has second window on SCI FI CHANNEL in the U.S.

Munich, Germany (2009/03/06) - TANDEM COMMUNICATIONS, Jaffe/Braunstein Entertainment and Muse Entertainment Enterprises are proud to announce ABC Network's acquisition of the American television rights to "Impact", a four-hour internationally produced disaster epic. The moon enters into a collision course with planet Earth after being hit by a powerful meteor. The survival of mankind hangs in the balance as three scientists are sent into space to risk their lives and save the planet.

The U.S. $14 million mini stars David James Elliott (Close to Home, Jag), Natasha Henstridge (Eli Stone, Species), Steven Culp (Desperate Housewives, E.R.), and Oscar® and Emmy® nominated James Cromwell (W., L.A. Confidential, Babe). "Impact" was created by Executive Producer Greg Gugliotta and Michael Vickerman (Superfire, Intimate Stranger) wrote the teleplay. "Impact" was directed by Michael J. Rohl (Smallville, Eureka, Supernatural).

"By respecting the sensibilities and expectations of the U.S. market and ensuring a high level of casting, story-telling and pacing, we were confident we would find a home for "Impact" in the U.S," says Rola Bauer, TANDEM Managing Director. "Using a split-window sales strategy, TANDEM has also sold the miniseries to NBC Universal's SCI FI Channel in the U.S. for a second-window, as well as to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment for video rights.

"Impact has an outstanding combination of strengths," says Howard Braunstein of Jaffe/Braunstein Entertainment. "It has a great story in a genre that consistently strikes a chord with audiences, an exceptionally strong cast that really delivers the action as well as the emotion of the miniseries, and high quality production values, a combination which I am sure will be the formula for success worldwide."

"Impact is an ideal acquisition for SCI FI's weekend movie franchise," said Thomas Vitale, EVP, Programming and Original Movies. "A high caliber disaster genre film with such a stellar cast is a recipe for success for SCI FI."

During this economic crisis TANDEM's expertise in structuring international coproductions becomes increasingly valuable in terms of providing television events to broadcasters for much less than their domestic production costs. TANDEM has come a long way since its beginnings in 1999 when it was an operation that focused on coproductions like Dune as well as international distribution.

"Over the past 10 years, we have broadened our scope to include development, financing, production and worldwide distribution," says Bauer. "We have also focused on nurturing relationships with U.S. broadcasters and the sale of "Impact" to ABC Network is a homerun in the Champions' League for a European independent. We are also happy to announce sales of the mini to major broadcasters around the world including TF1 (France), NHK (Japan) and ProSieben (Germany)."

Jaffe/Braunstein Films was founded in 1992 by Michael Jaffe and Howard Braunstein. Together they have produced more than 75 movies-for-television and miniseries. A selection of these titles includes: Emmy® nominated Elvis, starring Jonathan Rhys Myers, The Engagement Ring, starring Patricia Heaton, 10.5 Apocalypse, starring Beau Bridges and Frank Langella, Emmy® nominated The Memory Keeper's Daughter, starring Emily Watson and Dermot Mulroney, The Brook Ellison Story, directed by the late Christopher Reeve, The Rosa Parks Story, starring Angela Bassett and Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific, starring Glenn Close and Harry Connick Jr.

Muse Entertainment Enterprises, founded in 1998 by Michael Prupas, is a leading independent feature film and television producer known for well-crafted, high-quality productions. Muse's most recent television series include Crusoe, a co-production with Power and Moonlighting for NBC and Rogers Television, The Last Templar, a miniseries for NBC and Global Television, the 26-part series Family Biz for YTV and France 2, the theatrical feature The Deal starring William H. Macy and Meg Ryan, the award-winning television series Durham County and television movie The Christmas Choir. Among Muse Entertainment's many other award-winning productions are the mini-series Human Trafficking, Answered by Fire and The Flood, as well as the TV series This is Wonderland and Tales from the Neverending Story. Since its founding, Muse Entertainment has produced, co-produced and provided production services on more than 100 theatrical features, TV movies, mini-series and series.

TANDEM COMMUNICATIONS, located in Munich, Germany, was started in 1999 by Rola Bauer and Tim Halkin. In 2007 Jonas Bauer became a partner in the company. From the beginning, their strategy was to build a vertically-integrated media company whose core business is International production and worldwide distribution. From the Emmy® nominated Dune to the Emmy® nominated Dragons' World to the Golden Globe® nominated The Company to the Nora Roberts Franchise, TANDEM continues to identify and develop high-quality projects in a wide range of event programming. TANDEM produced the DIVA Award-winning Ring of the Nibelungs and recently saw its new event movie, Lost City Raiders air on the SCI FI Channel, garnering excellent ratings. In April 2008, TANDEM announced its successful acquisition of the film rights for Ken Follett's monumental best-seller The Pillars of the Earth which it will produce with Ridley and Tony Scott's Scott Free Productions. TANDEM continues to grow its library of event programming with wide audience appeal.

International producers behind sci-fi project

BERLIN -- ABC has picked up "Impact," a four-hour sci-fi mini-series about humanity's efforts to survive after the moon is hit by a meteor and enters into a collision course with Earth.

NBC Universal's Sci Fi Channel took second-window rights to the mini, while Sony Pictures Home Entertainment acquired video rights.

The $14 million mini is produced by Germany's Tandem Communications, Hollywood-based Jaffe/Braunstein Entertainment and Canada's Muse Entertainment Enterprises.

It's the latest international collaboration for Munich-based Tandem as it continues to broaden its scope in the development, financing, production and worldwide distribution of event TV projects.

Directed by Michael J. Rohl ("Smallville," "Supernatural"), "Impact" stars David James Elliott ("JAG"), Natasha Henstridge ("Eli Stone"), Steven Culp ("Desperate Housewives") and James Cromwell ("W.").

Tandem managing director Rola Bauer wants to extend the company's relationship with U.S. broadcasters, eager to stretch their dollars, by promoting Tandem's expertise in structuring international co-productions on TV event movies at a considerably lower cost than Stateside productions.

Tandem, which is handling international sales, also inked deals for "Impact" with commercial channels ProSieben in Germany and TF1 in France as well as Japanese pubcaster NHK.

The German shingle has continued to expand into international productions in recent years, partnering with U.S. filmmakers on a slew of international minis and event movies, including TNT's CIA thriller "The Company," produced with Ridley Scott and John Calley; CBS' "Robert Ludlum's the Hades Factor," with Sanitsky Co. and Ludlum Entertainment; futuristic actioner "Lost City Raiders," starring Ian Somerhalder, and fantasy epic "Ring of the Nibelungs" from "The Baader Meinhof Complex" helmer Uli Edel, both for the Sci Fi Channel.

COLOGNE, Germany (Hollywood Reporter) - ABC has acquired the U.S. TV rights to "Impact," a four-hour miniseries about a meteor that strikes the moon and sends it on a collision course with Earth.

NBC Universal's Sci Fi Channel has picked up second-window rights to the disaster drama, which stars David James Elliott, Natasha Henstridge, Steven Culp and James Cromwell and is directed by Michael Rohl ("Eureka").

ABC is expected to air it in the summer as a limited series.

The $14 million miniseries was produced by Germany's Tandem Communications, Jaffe/Braunstein Entertainment and Muse Entertainment and sold by Tandem.

Sci Fi has a strong track record with Tandem shows, with the futuristic tale "Lost City Raiders" and fantasy epic "Ring of the Nibelungs" having scored ratings gold for the channel.

The sale to ABC is a high-water mark for Tandem, which has carved a niche in high-end TV events by combining international financing with U.S.-bankable casts and scripts. "Impact" was presold to Germany's ProSieben, France's TF1 and Spain's Cuatro before shooting began. The mini also recently inked a deal with Japanese pubcaster NHK, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has acquired U.S. video rights.

"We have focused on nurturing relationships with U.S. broadcasters, and the sale of 'Impact' to ABC is a home run for a European independent," Tandem managing director Rola Bauer said.

Bauer's company is positioning itself as a one-stop shop for U.S. and international broadcasters, expanding its scope to development, financing, production and worldwide distribution. Tandem hopes the strategy will become increasingly attractive as channels in the U.S. and abroad cut back on production costs.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has acquired U.S. video rights to "Impact."

Pssst ... wanna buy a moon rock? If that doesn't excite you, how about a crisp cotton dress shirt worn by the president of the United States?

Or an outfit worn by Natasha Henstridge of Species fame or by David James Elliott, the former star of JAG?

You'll find a lot more where those came from on Wednesday when the producers of "Impact", the $14-million sci-fi mini-series that just wrapped a 40-day shoot here, sell off thousands of dollars worth of costumes, props and furnishings.

For years, "set-dec" and wardrobe sales were one of the best kept secrets in B.C.'s movie industry. When a production wrapped, everything was sold off to other shows or bargain-hunting industry insiders and fortunate friends.

Impact producer Ted Bauman says it makes sense to open up set-dec sales to the public in a market like Victoria. He did it last summer when a sale was held downtown to blow out props and costumes from the Hallmark film Pictures of Hollis Woods.

Those who show up between 10 and 4 Wednesday for the cash-only sale at the former NOW furniture building, 2269 Douglas St., will get more than just a chance to buy a piece of the action. They'll get a sneak peek inside the studio where interiors were shot.

"A lot of the movie sets should still be in place," Bauman says. "People can come in and take a look at the lunar lander on the moon, and they might see 'the war room' and the European Space Agency control room -- parts of it, anyway."

Impact, which co-stars James Cromwell, Benjamin Sadler and Steve Culp (Thirteen Days) as the U.S. president, wrapped Friday. Victoria doubled as several worldwide locations including Ottawa, Washington, Munich and New Mexico.

The German-Canadian co-production, directed by Mike Rohl from a script by Emmy-winning screenwriter Michael Vickerman (Superfire), focuses on the impact of a meteor shower that sends the moon on a collision course with earth.

Items will be priced to sell, Bauman says -- much of it going for 50 per cent of what the company paid for it.

"We have lots of electronics, great clothing and lots of Ikea furniture," he said. Unsold items will go to charity.

It's not just Ikea couches, computers, dress suits, tables, office chairs and houseplants, set decorator Terry Lewis explains.

"The beauty of set-dec sales is they're very eclectic. There can be everything from nice high-end furnishings to what we ended up selling after I did The Egg Factory -- not one, but two gynecological examination tables."

Lewis, an 18-year industry veteran, refers to the "One man's junk is another man's treasure" axiom.

He still remembers the "old days" when studios would pack up sets and costumes in a trailer and send them to Los Angeles for storage.

"That's the world of higher-budget features," he says. "Nowadays the cost of making these lower-budget projects is so close to the line it's almost an economic necessity."

Consumers should be aware sale items have been used on film sets and might show signs of wear, he says.

Unusual items include a roll of copper sheeting bought in Kentucky to form the lunar lander's heat shield; and German light switches imported from Cologne.

"I challenge you to find a German light switch anywhere else in Victoria," he jokes.

"Or a Soyuz space capsule."

An estimated $50,000 worth of costumes will also be up for grabs, says costume designer Trish Flynn.

"This was a big show," she says.

"We fit over 100 actors with 15 costume changes on average, and 500 background."

While you won't be able to buy spacesuits, Red Cross uniforms or military apparel, expect lots of sportswear, business attire, clothes worn by scientists and some kids' clothing, sizes 8 and 9.

The featured actors get first crack at the costumes.

"They've worn it and they get used to it," Flynn says, adding prospective buyers should be aware costumes are altered.

"You might have a size 40, with the arms short or the pants long, depending on the actor," she cautions.

Oh, and just so you know. Those moon rocks are made of Styrofoam.

Produced by Munich-based Tandem Communications, Jaffe/Braunstein Films and Muse Entertainment Enterprises, the $14 million miniseries began shooting on location in British Columbia last week. German thesps Benjamin Sadler ("Side Effects") and Florentine Lahme ("Rabbit Without Ears") also star.

Pic is produced in association with Germany's ProSieben Television, Spain's Cuatro, TF1 in France and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Tandem, which is handling worldwide distribution, has already pre-sold the pic in more than 90 territories, including Austria, Russia, Poland, Latin America and the Middle East.

"Despite the financing challenges in the market today, networks and video distributors worldwide are eager for programming of this nature," Tandem's Jonas Bauer said. "The story has broad appeal because it combines universal fears we all have — of large objects flying through space and hitting the Earth. That's what we're playing with, the effects on gravity, electro-magnetic disturbances, tsunamis, earthquakes, a high-speed train getting airborne at 200 miles an hour."
