Mayim Bialik, Danny Masterson and Thomas Ian Nicholas Become the Prize in Social Network Contest for the New Feature Film The Chicago 8

Mayim Bialik (2012 Emmy Award nominee for The Big Bang Theory, Blossom), Danny Masterson (Steven Hyde of That 70's Show), and Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Reunion) will take part in a contest for the motion picture The Chicago 8, where entrants have a chance to win a one-on-one chat or meeting with the stars.

The Chicago 8 releases theatrically and on video-on-demand the opening day of the Democratic National Convention, September 4, 2012. It is the true story about the notorious 1968 trial that resulted when seven leaders of an anti-war movement and a member of the Black Panthers, were charged with conspiracy to incite riots in Chicago while protesting near the 1968 DNC. Desperate to stop what they saw as an "immoral war", this group was ready to take on the establishment, express their freedom of speech by all means necessary, while paying a price for their actions.

One grand prize winner will chat with Mayim Bialik, one with Masterson, the third with Nicholas. The 3 grand prize winners will also receive two movie passes to the North Carolina premiere. The premiere will be held in Charlotte, NC, across the street from the Democratic National Convention, so, in a sense, Jerry Rubin, Abbie Hoffman and Bobby Seale will be back stirring up controversy at a political convention again.

"With recent demonstrations on Wall Street and in the Middle East, The Chicago 8 is timely with its message of being non-apathetic and fearless when it comes to standing up for your rights," says The Chicago 8 director Pinchas Perry. "This movie becomes even more relevant during this 2012 election year as many voices are being heard throughout the country, no doubt creating a change in the political landscape."

Winner of the Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film at the 2011 Beverly Hills Film Festival, The Chicago 8 features a star-studded soundtrack with artists such as Bob Dylan and Jefferson Airplane. The cast also includes Gary Cole (The Brady Bunch Movie), Orlando Jones (How to Live with your Parents for the Rest of your Life), Philip Baker Hall (Magnolia) and Steven Culp (The West Wing).

Fans can enter the contest at The Chicago 8 Facebook page. In addition, 100 DVDs of The Chicago 8 will be awarded to randomly picked entrants. No purchase is necessary to enter--simply "Like" The Chicago 8 Facebook page.

Synopsis from the website:

The Chicago 8 is the true story from the notorious 1968 trial that resulted when seven leaders of a Vietnam anti-war movement, and a member of the Black Panthers, were charged with conspiracy to incite devastating riots in Chicago.  Desperate to stop what they saw as an "immoral war", this group was ready to take on the establishment, express their freedom of speech by all means necessary, while paying a price for their actions.

Never in America's history has youthful protest captured society's imagination nor polarized it to such a degree.  A protest paralleled in the modern era, with recent establishment uprisings on Wall Street and in the Middle East.

A star-studded soundtrack features artists from Bob Dylan to Jefferson Airplane. The cast includes Gary Cole (Office Space, The Brady Bunch Movie), Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory), Danny Masterson (That 70's Show), Orlando Jones (MadTv), Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Reunion), Philip Baker Hall (Magnolia) and Steven Culp (The West Wing).

Synopsis:

Based on actual courtroom transcripts, The Chicago 8 is the dramatic retelling of the trial of eight leaders of the Vietnam anti-war movement following the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The film revisits this bizarre and horrifying case and serves as a cautionary tale in today's world of increasingly eroded due process and courthouses driven more by political agendas than by the proper administration of justice.

1968 was a rough year. The Vietnam War was spiraling out of control, the Civil Rights Movement was peaking, student revolts were widespread both at home and abroad, and Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were both assassinated. And, it was an election year. Incumbent President Lyndon Johnson, amid the turbulence and chaos, announced in March he would not seek re-election. Later that summer, Presidential candidate Kennedy was assassinated throwing the election into further disarray. As the Democratic Party descended into Chicago for their nominating convention, leaders of the Vietnam anti-war movement decided to use the gathering as an opportunity to protest the war. During the protests, Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley authorized the police to use brutal force to squash the rallies and, as a result, rioting broke out. One person was killed, hundreds were injured and thousands were arrested.

A year later, newly-elected President Richard Nixon authorized the prosecution of eight men for conspiracy to riot; Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froines, Lee Weiner and Bobby Seale. These men were taken from their homes by the FBI, brought to Chicago and stood trial. The defendants, believing the proceedings to be a mockery, treated the occasion in kind. It became a circus. Presiding Judge Julius Hoffman, clearly biased, denied every motion made by the defense, and, ultimately resorted to extreme and inhumane tactics in an effort to reclaim order.

Featuring a stellar ensemble cast including Gary Cole (Office Space, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby), Steven Culp (Thirteen Days, TV's Desperate Housewives), Danny Masterson (TV's That 70's Show), Orlando Jones (Magnolia, TV's MAD TV), Philip Baker Hall (Magnolia, Boogie Nights), and Mayim Bialik (Beaches, TV's Blossom).

The Chicago 8 is more than just a courtroom drama, exploring the ideas and philosophies that challenged the status quo, and reminding us about the importance of an objective, fair justice system.

REVIEW – "THE CHICAGO 8"

THE CHICAGO 8

Directed by: Pinchas Perry
Written By: Pinchas Perry
Starring: Orlando Jones, Gary Cole, Danny Masterson, Mayim Bialik, Philip Baker Hall, Steven Culp, Thomas Ian Nicolas, David Julian Hirsh, Aaron Abrams and Peter Mackenzie

April 6th was opening night at the 11th Annual Beverly Hills Film Festival and I was lucky enough to catch the festival's opening night headliner, THE CHICAGO 8. Written and Directed by Pinchas Perry, the film drew an impressive standing room only crowd. The film festival runs April 6-10. For more information and tickets, visit www.beverlyhillsfilmfestival.com.

Hollywood has had a love affair with legal dramas since 12 ANGRY MEN hit the screen. The genre has been done time and time again, most notably in the 80's when there was an influx of courtroom dramas at the box office. Audiences haven't been subjected to them as of late and I'm not really sure why as the genre is rife with anguish, emotion and intense drama, especially if your protagonist is innocent. THE CHICAGO 8 is the latest to tackle this arena. Based on the actual court transcripts of the trial, it gives the film a more authentic feel.

To set the stage, the film opens on archival news footage. Here's the rundown: During the 1968 DNC in late August, various rallies and demonstrations took place in protest of President Lyndon B. Johnson's policies on the Vietnam War. The Grant Park rally was attended by thousands of protesters, some of whom attempted to march to the International Amphitheater – where the convention was being held – but were stopped by police. This marked the beginning of five days of physical confrontations between protesters and police. Hundreds of police officers as well as protesters were injured. As a result, eight protesters were charged with various crimes, including conspiracy to incite a riot. The eight – David Dellinger (Peter MacKenzie), Rennie Davis, Tom Hayden (David Julian Hirsh), Abbie Hoffman (Thomas Ian Nicolas), Jerry Rubin (Danny Masterson), Bobby Seale (Orlando Jones), John Froines (Jamie Elman) and Lee Weiner (Aaron Abrams) – were reduced to seven when Seale was severed from the case and sentenced to four years for contempt of court.

Let's begin with what works for the film. The cast that's been assembled is phenomenal. It's mind blowing that all these talented actors were able to be brought together to film this movie. Orlando Jones elevates the material and makes Seale's fight a more impacting one. Philip Baker Hall, who plays Judge Julius Hoffman, practically carries the film as he's in almost every scene. Gary Cole and Steven Culp as the dueling attorneys also turn in noteworthy performances.

Writer/ Director Pinchas Perry introduces us to the tone of the time period in a shrewd manner by interspersing actual news footage from the months of the trial. Perry, an ex-attorney, definitely has a feel for the courtroom. However, having that experience and access to the facts isn't enough. He's left out some of the heart that is necessary in a story like this. When the seven men are sentenced, the audience doesn't really feel anything as the film has left us kind of cold. My other complaint is that the split screen effect is used ad naseum and doesn't add to the film at all; it just detracts from it.

THE CHICAGO 8 felt as if it would make for a very successful play rather than a movie; the script had a dialogue-heavy quality to it. Overall, this is a fantastic ensemble of actors and material rich in dramatic potential, but it ends up feeling more like a court transcript than a drama.

(September 25, 2009)
Steven is currently filming the feature film "The Chicago 8" in Los Angeles.

The film is based on the Chicago 8 trials in the 1968. The Chicago 8, as they were called, were all tried in response to the riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention.

"The Chicago 8" is written and directed by Pinchas Perry.

Filming started September 14, 2009.

Steven plays the part of Thomas Foran.

****

Thomas Foran was the chief prosecutor in the Chicago Conspiracy trial. He was generally seen as the government's straight man at trial-- restrained and professional--but in his summation denounced the defendants as "evil men," "professional extremists," and "liars and obscene haters."

Foran was a man of many friends. He was proud of his close working relationship with the FBI, but was also quick to cite his friendship with Robert Kennedy, claiming to be a "better friend" of RFK than was Tom Hayden. Foran was especially close to Mayor Richard Daley, having served as Assistant Corporation Counsel for Chicago. On the witness stand, Daley described Foran as "one of the greatest attorneys in the country and the finest man I have met in public or private life."

At the time of the Conspiracy Trial, Foran had served two years as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. The former World War II carrier pilot and 1950 graduate of Detroit Law School won a reputation as a tough fighter of organized crime, prosecuting over 150 crime figures.

Until 1999, Foran continued to practice law in the twenty-person Chicago firm of Foran & Schultz. His clients included Bethlehem Steel, McDonald's, O'Hare Airport, Milton Bradley, and Hasbro. He died in 2000 following a battle with bone cancer.
