Grey's Anatomy follows the lives of surgical interns and residents at the Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital as they gradually evolve into seasoned doctors with the help of their competent mentors. Typically every installment commences with a voice-over narrative from Dr. Meredith Grey, foreshadowing the theme of the episode. Most revolve around the doctors' everyday lives as surgeons, but the show also places an emphasis on their personal rather than their professional lives. Each season tends to represent the interns' academic year and with each completed year elevating the residents to a level higher in the surgical field. Each of the seasons has always ended with an intense finale, typically involving a catastrophic event within the hospital staff, such as a death or character departure.

At the conclusion of the eighth season, the final year of residency is coming to a close. The graduating interns are all planning to relocate to different hospitals in the pursuit of their specialties. However, all plans are put on hold when several doctors from Seattle Grace are involved in an aviation accident.

The ninth season opens as the doctors of Seattle Grace are faced with the aftermath season eight's plane crash finale. With their futures unknown, the doctors must learn to adapt to changes, cope with losses and move forward with their relationships and careers.

Season nine brings some new faces to the show when Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) decides to accept an offer from The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Joining the cast are Steven Culp ("Desperate Housewives") who portrays the head of cardio, Dr. Darren Parker and William Daniels ("St. Elsewhere" and "Boy Meets World") as Dr. Craig Thomas. Each mentoring Dr. Yang in decidedly different directions.
